Othello 4

How would  the effect of the play have been different if Othello had died before discovering Desdemona's innocence?

"...Then you must speak
of one that loved not wisely but too well;" V.ii.342-343

Upon Othello's death, I could still feel some sympathy for the man because he had realized he killed the love of his life for no reason.  Without his discovery of the truth, he would have died a murderer, and only a murderer. Only the reader would know the truth, which would lead the reader to hate Othello, but because he learns the truth the reader feels for Othello. Don't get me wrong, what he did was awful and he deserved to die, but it's sad that he cannot live without his true love. For Othello himself, if he wouldn't have found out the truth he would have died thinking he saved mankind from a whore, but since he did find out he died knowing he should have known Desdemona loved him too much to cheat.
